University of Maryland, Baltimore County
Marks, Thomas Architects was commissioned to reassess the master plan for the University with the challenge of upgrading the quality and image of student housing types and appropriate expansion sites. The overall goal was to provide 2,000 beds of undergraduate housing by 2004. The first two phases, Erickson Hall, were completed in 2000. The third and fourth phases, Harbor Hall opened in 2002. Phase five, Walker Apartments opened in 2004, with future phases for graduate student housing still under planning and development. Master planned to create a college town feel inclusive of retail, outdoor recreation and student and faculty housing. This next phase of master planning for UMBC by Marks, Thomas Architects emphasizes a main street and a network of formal green spaces with courtyards creating a pedestrian village. Car access is made from the larger thorough fares and structured parking is hidden behind townhouse and loft apartment blocks further enhancing the pedestrian experience.
