Orokawa Family Center Y

Towson, Maryland
Y of Central Maryland

The architecture and interior design of the building is intended to foster the Y of Central Maryland’s goal of creating an active, accessible and healthy community center that incorporates physical activity with spiritual health. Keeping this core value in mind, the design had to strike a balance between the main programming components of physical activity and the end-user’s spiritual well-being.

Far from what a typical fitness center would be, the design of the space was centered on the idea that the expansive lobby that you walk through as you enter the building would present to the public an overall comforting, home away from home feeling. Since opening in September 2013, Y members continue to meet friends before an exercise class at the modular seating that wraps a circular fireplace, or ordering a smoothie and chatting after a class at the Health Bar or playing on computers or game tables in the Family Room. The open feel and neutral tones of the major design elements result in the creation of a calming sense of environment and a peaceful respite before or after a work-out.
