A & R Development Corporation
Heritage Crossing, winner of the Best in American Living award was an exciting and challenging project which revitalized a key area of west Baltimore. Marks, Thomas Architects collaborated with Urban Design Associates to replace the existing public housing through Hope VI funding with a mixed-income neighborhood of 185 homes and 75 rental units. The development consists of mainly three bedroom homes with just over 1,400 SF. A historic Victorian-era gazebo was restored to serve as the community’s centerpiece. The design was guided by principles of New Urbanism. A carefully landscaped village green, shortened streets, large backyards and a mixture of housing types, many with large front porches, tall windows and brick siding provide a new sense of community in a previously blighted area.
