Burgess Mill Station

While focusing on sustainability, affordability, universal accessibility, and perhaps most importantly, community, Marks Thomas provided complete design services for this 250-unit housing community. The development consists of a mix of market rate and affordable apartments in garden style apartments, townhouses and multi-family manor houses.

Development goals required a pedestrian oriented, environmentally sustainable and interconnected community. Extreme grades coupled with three separate parcels divided by heavily traveled roadways presented design challenges that we solved through a creative universal circulation system.

This amenity provides sidewalks that invite neighborly interactions and trails that connect the noncontiguous parcels, providing opportunities to encourage social and recreational activity. Additionally, this project serves an important role in the evolution of green building practices. Issues such as carbon footprint, energy data monitoring, nutritional equity, connectivity and public transportation opportunities were evaluated during the design process.
