Marks Thomas Wins 2015 Excellence in Design Award from the American Institute of Architects
Baltimore, MD, September 30, 2015 —Marks Thomas was honored with a 2015 Excellence in Design Award for Interior Architecture from the Maryland State Component of the American Institute of Architects for its work on Millennial Media’s new headquarters.
A rapidly expanding tech company, Millennial Media required more space. But it wanted to retain its distinct corporate culture, which includes open communication among employees. Marks Thomas worked with Millennial to create a functional office space within the confines of the large floor plate of the historic American Can Company Factory Building on Boston Street at the mouth of the Canton neighborhood in Baltimore.
To unify the sprawling space, a large circulation artery or “avenue” was formed to transect the office area and increase connectivity between remote points. To accommodate the needs of a laptop-oriented staff, numerous work spaces with varying levels of light and privacy were placed throughout. Fully enclosed meeting rooms and offices serve as the boundaries of fully open workspaces.
Determined to take advantage of high ceilings and an abundance of natural light via clerestory windows, Marks Thomas incorporated mezzanines that offer breakaway spaces with whiteboards for meetings and square footage for games and recreation.
Tom Liebel, lead architect on the project, explained: “It was critical to Millennial that a flexible, mixed-use space was located centrally in the floor plan. Employees needed to be able to gather. The ‘town hall’ space, which is conveniently situated off of the office’s main walking artery and various smaller, interconnected pathways, will be able to be used for a multitude of functions from formal presentations to casual lunchtime gatherings.”
The jury’s comments called the project “an exemplary example where creative problem solving and storytelling became the guiding principles for a design solution that came out of the project constants and challenges.” It concluded: “It is clear that the design team embraced these constraints and converted them into an inspiring environment filled with life and energy.”
