Marks, Thomas Architects Recognized by Senior Housing News
Baltimore, MD, January 27, 2016 — Marks, Thomas Architects’ recently completed retirement living community, Ashby Ponds, has been recognized for excellence and innovation by the Senior Housing News Architecture and Design Awards program.
Receiving recognition in the category of CCRCs — Continuing Care Retirement Communities — Ashby Ponds is the eighth large-campus project designed by Marks, Thomas Architects in conjunction with Erickson Living, which since 1983 has provided retirement living solutions with accommodations that align with the expectations and needs of modern seniors.
Ashby Ponds, located in Ashburn, Virginia, includes three distinct “neighborhoods.” Marks, Thomas Architects assigned a theme to each neighborhood — mind, body, or spirit — each selected to include their own set of corresponding social spaces and amenities. For example, the first neighborhood’s focus on the “body” offers a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool, and personalized wellness programs. The neighborhood dedicated to “spirit” houses a performing arts center, artist studios, and an exhibition space. The third neighborhood, not yet built, will focus on “mind” and feature a mix of educational and contemplative spaces.
At over 863,000 square feet, Ashby Ponds offers greater personalization options to residents, another element understood by Marks, Thomas to be important to today’s seniors, including apartments of variable sizes, styles, and finishes. Nearly every unit also has a large patio or screened-in porch, extending living space to the outdoors and preventing the institutional feel so often associated with retirement living.
“The evolution of what seniors desire informs every aspect of what we included. This is very unlike the homogeneous, one-size-fits-all institutional senior housing model of the past,” says lead architect Mark Heckman. He adds, “Marks, Thomas is constantly tweaking the model and modifying it to suit the needs of the market and the people who will make these communities their homes. To me, that’s the secret to why Erickson communities are some of the most successful retirement communities in the country.”
